. . . but Dominique Strauss-Kahn was recently released after 30 hours of questioning for his alleged involvement in a prostitution ring.
I've posted about this case before.
Okay...get ready for a rant...
Several months ago sexual assault charges were dropped against DSK in the NYC hotel case because the credibility of the maid was called into question. Namely, the details of her story changed, she made a questionable phone call to an acquaintance in prison and she lied on her asylum application. Certainly these facts must be taken into consideration when building a case but these inconsistencies are not totally out of line for a rape allegation. Assuming she was assaulted, it is likely that she would be suffering from PTSD which could lead to strange behavior and difficulty making sense of the event. Also, because English is not her first language, I can see how her story could fall apart under interrogation. In far less serious circumstances, I find myself saying what is easier or close enough when speaking in a foreign language instead of what is correct. I cannot imagine what my French or Spanish would sound like during police questioning.
With regards to lying on her lying on her asylum application several years ago. The lying should definitely be a strike against her credibility but we should also consider what she lied about. I cannot imagine the circumstances that would make a person desperate to leave their home country but I would venture to guess that if things were so awful, lying to leave is understandable.
That all said, we are left with a victim with valid but explainable strikes against her credibility.
Now, let's look at Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a man who has had repeated allegations of sexual assault, harassment and now involvement with prostitutes. Why wasn't his credibility called into question in the same manner? While the maid has a generally sketchy history, Strauss-Kahn has a specific history of sexual misconduct assault accusations. Even Strauss-Kahn's friends have acknowledged his harassment of women. Somehow it seems that these details were ignored and the case was thrown away.
So, you know, not to bring up an old subject, but since he was in the news again for sexual misconduct.....
