You may have noticed that I enjoy applying my Wikipedia level knowledge of scientific topics to my personal life. Today I'm writing about a financial topic with which I am slightly more familiar: The J Curve.
In private equity, the J Curve illustrates the assumed trajectory of the investment, there is the initial cash outlay, negative returns in the short term, possible subsequent cash outlays, the break-even point and finally (hopefully) steep positive returns.
And this is how I feel about my upcoming move. The most obvious parallel is the financial burden of moving cross county. Though I also feel like I'm on a bit of an emotional J Curve. Moving back to Philly is something I started dreaming about after my first few weeks in Seattle and I am so excited to be returning to the city I love. That said, with the planning and good-byes, I feel spent. My hope is that I will hit the break-even point in April ... when I experience my first spring in 5 years! Here's hoping.
